Miles is a pro bass player hailing from Redding, Ca. A graduate of the Shasta College Music program, he was at the top of the class, while studying upright and electric bass under, and subbing for double bassist, Bruce Calin. About three years ago, Miles’ put down the upright in favor for the six string bass, which is now his main instrument of choice. Playing both six string fretted and fretless basses has widened his scope for the role of the bass in music. While still being able to hold down the low end, he can more easily step out and play melodically. Known for his “sick chops”, Miles focuses on applying them tastefully and functionally. While being competent in all styles of music, Miles’ main interests lie in the areas of jazz, funk, world music, and solo bass. He now resides in Santa Cruz, Ca where he moved to play with the progressive world jazz ensemble Out Of Io.
Miles’ teaching philosophy is to help students develop the tools they need to best express themselves musically, and develop their own recognizable voice. For beginning students the lessons will be first based around learning the role of bass in popular music, music theory learning scales, arpeggios, technique, reading music and improvising. For students who already have a basic knowledge under their belt, the lessons can become more specialized into music styles, developing “chops”, and learning advanced solo bass techniques such as slap, thumbing, and tapping. The students interests will dictate the direction of the lessons, they decide what they want to learn.
